Here’s How To Update Your Skincare Routine For Your 40s

We all know that caring for your skin in your 20s and 30s can be a real game-changer to prevent premature ageing. But it can sometimes get hard to practice all the beauty commandments you preach, right?

 

Well, even if you haven’t applied sunscreen as often as you’ve chugged iced coffee to meet a deadline, it’s never too late to start a good skincare habit. For when nature’s biological clock and your fluctuating hormones take over, rely on Bollywood’s favourite dermatologist, Dr Jaishree Sharad to tell you everything about making your skin brighter, firmer and healthier. Here are the mature skin secrets she wants you to know. 
 
Q. How does skin change at 40? 
As you grow older, it is inevitable for your skin to change and demand more. “In your 40s, the collagen and elastin fibres start to break down causing your skin to lose its tautness. Add to this hormonal changes caused by menopause that can often make your skin feel dehydrated and dry,” says Dr Jaishree. “You will notice the development of wrinkles, crow's feet, frown lines and forehead lines.” she says.

 

Q. What’s the first step to meet your skin’s new demands? 
“No matter your skin type, stick with a trusted cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen to get started. Then, introduce a serum that’s rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, and apply it right before your moisturiser for an extra boost of nourishment.” Now, if you have sensitive skin, you might be afraid of breaking out thanks to the newest addition to your routine. Well, this way you can tell if it is actually working out for you or not.
Another key skin saviour is an undereye cream. “Look for one with retinol, vitamin C and vitamin K that will brighten and reduce premature ageing near the eyes,” advises Dr Jaishree.  
 

Q. So, how do you tackle these new skin concerns? 
We all age differently, and some of us may even see more pigmentation or adult acne for the first time. “Building a night routine to address specific concerns will help you achieve your skin goals. For breakouts or adult acne on the chin and jawline, use beta hydroxy acids (BHA) on alternate nights. To address pigmentation, try a vitamin C serum that brightens skin. For skin that feels saggy, peptides, polyphenols and vitamin A will provide firming benefits. You can also introduce a retinol serum or cream twice a week as well,” says Dr Jaishree.
