How To Rock A Matte Pout Without Looking Chapped

It’s official: Matte lips are back – and we know you couldn’t be happier. While we all do have a soft spot for glossy lips inspired by the clean girl look, sometimes we just don’t have the time or energy for that kind of upkeep.

This is where matte lipsticks (ironically) shine. One layer is all you need for saturated colour, and most formulas – especially liquid ones – can last through a few meals and drinks with ease. However, along with this also come chapped lips and lots of creases that can emphasise the lines on your lips.

Not to worry – here are three ways you can tackle them with ease.

Prioritise the prep

Hydration and exfoliation are the name of the game. Applying any matte lip product to your pout will not only dry it out, but also emphasise any fine lines you may have. So, always use a lip scrub to slough away any dead skin cells for smoother lips. Follow it up with a generous coat of your favourite lip balm, and then apply your lipstick on top. This will also help give your lipstick something to adhere to.

Technique is everything

Unlike glossy, balmy formulas that sit on top of your lips, matte lipsticks tend to melt into your lips. This means that you need to be careful when applying them. Stick to short, single strokes over a particular area instead of multiple layers. This will help avoid build-up and won’t emphasise any lines on your lips, too.

Touch it up

Even though matte lipsticks are relatively longer lasting as compared to other lipstick formulas, they do need a touch up in between meals. Instead of layering more lipstick onto your pout, we suggest wiping off what’s remaining on your lips, and then starting with a fresh round of application. In fact, you can take this opportunity to apply another coat of lip balm underneath, too. This will prevent the lipstick from looking heavy or crusty and emphasising your fine lines.
