How To Take Care Of Mature Skin

By Anupriya Jamuar

We all wish we could age like fine wine. Unfortunately, that isn’t usually the case with our skin. Ageing brings with it fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tones. You might develop crow's feet and frown lines, and your laugh lines get more prominent. You can also develop undereye hollows and you might lose the sharp jawline of your early years.

But these natural changes don’t have to be a cause for panic. With the right skincare routine, you can confidently step into this new phase of your life with healthy, well-nourished skin. We asked celebrity dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad to weigh in on some frequently asked questions around skin ageing to help you get started.

What’s a good morning routine for mature skin?
Use a mild cleanser and apply your serums. Use vitamin C and hyaluronic-based serums in the morning. Then moisturise and do not forget to apply SPF. Make sure your SPF is 50+ and your sunscreen has PA 4+, so you get protection from both UVA and UVB rays of the sun.

Is blue light protection necessary?
With how much we use our laptops and phones? Yes. That’s why you must use sunscreen even at home. “It’s better if your SPF contains other ingredients like iron oxide, vitamin E, C or other antioxidants as they protect you from visible light, as well as blue light and infrared rays,” advises Dr Jaishree.

What’s a good night-time skincare routine?
Cleanse your face and use an undereye serum that has vitamin K or C in it. Or if you have too many fine lines then even a retinol-based undereye serum will do. After that, apply your face serums like niacinamide for uneven skin tones, and your AHAs and BHAs two-three times a week. After your serums, apply your moisturiser and follow that up with an anti-ageing cream.

Why are anti-ageing creams important?
These products contain ingredients like peptides, resveratrol, coenzyme cutane, hyaluronic acid, polyphenols and marine algae, which help in preventing further damage to your skin. Also, if your skin looks aged then you must have a retinol-based product in your skincare routine.

What are some recommended lifestyle changes for mature skin?
This is the time to give up sugar. Try eliminating sugar, dairy products and maida from your diet. Instead, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, have enough water, exercise, do yoga and meditate, and sleep early. Make sure you’re getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep. And lastly, you can choose to visit a dermatologist to get some basic skin treatments done,” says Dr Jaishree.
