Gold remains the undefeated front-runner of the festive season. From Bollywood’s OG Golden Girl Rekha in her beautiful Kanjeevaram sarees, Schiaparelli’s surrealist fashion to Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s classic eye make-up on the Cannes red carpet — the high-lustre metallic hue is an end-of-the-year celebrations favourite.
“As Indians, we have mostly olive skin tones. And gold compliments that very well. Plus, we wear a lot of gold jewellery, making the colour a great choice for make-up,” says Mumbai-based bridal and celebrity make-up artist Mausam Gandhi. Playing with gold on the eyes instantly adds a punch of glam. Mausam recommends using gold pencil eyeliner or eyeshadow for a fail-safe look. To upgrade your look, she suggests trying a double-winged eyeliner — black along your lash line, with a thin line of gold parallel to it.
Celebrity make-up artist Shraddha Inder Mehta — the woman behind Tara Sutaria’s dewy make-up — also loves playing with gold on the eyes. “I always finish with multiple coats of mascara and bold brows for a defined look,” she says.
“Gloss is back,” says Shraddha. Mausam agrees. Both are fans of an understated gold gloss to add a touch of glimmer to your make-up. For an all-out gold look, you simply cannot go wrong with a gold highlighter. A trick Mausam often uses on all her brides for their wedding day — a soft layer of a gold liquid highlighter underneath their foundation for a radiant finish. Start with an extremely light layer and carefully build it up till your skin looks seamlessly radiant.
